GTA 6 PS5 vs Xbox Series X: Which Version to Buy?
GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and the big question is which console version to buy. Short answer: the base PS5 and Xbox Series X are expected to be very close, so price, ecosystem and your existing library matter more than raw performance.
Quick summary
- Release date: November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S (no PC version announced).
- Rockstar's Rob Nelson reportedly said the game targets 30fps on all consoles; a 60fps option is not confirmed (secondhand account, no official mode list).
- Digital Foundry's analysis of the base PS5 Extended Look found stable 30fps and an internal resolution that looks like 1440p, upscaled to 4K.
- PCMag notes the base PS5 and Series X are roughly equivalent in power.
Is GTA 6 better on PS5 or Xbox Series X?
There is no official like-for-like comparison yet. Rockstar's footage so far was captured on a base PS5, and PCMag describes GTA 6 as primarily advertised as a PlayStation 5 title. Xbox Series X has similar hardware, so big gaps are not expected. A leaked infographic shared on X claims PS5 and Series X both run 1440p at 30fps with medium ray tracing, but that is unconfirmed.
Will GTA 6 run at 60fps?
Do not count on it at launch. Digital Foundry called a 60fps console version extremely unlikely, since the game was tuned around a fixed 30fps. Some leaks suggest 40fps or higher modes, which remain unverified. See our GTA 6 gameplay details for what has been shown.
| Console | Reported target | Status |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 | ~1440p internal, 30fps, upscaled to 4K | Digital Foundry analysis of footage |
| Xbox Series X | 30fps target; 1440p claimed | Unconfirmed leak |
| Xbox Series S | 30fps, lower resolution | Unconfirmed leak (1080p claimed) |
| PS5 Pro | Better resolution and ray tracing possible; 4K30 or 1440p40 claimed | Unconfirmed leak |
Is PS5 Pro worth it for GTA 6?
The PS5 Pro has more horsepower, but PCMag lists it at $899.99 and there is no official word on Pro improvements for GTA 6. Buying one only for this game is risky until Rockstar confirms enhancements.
Which version should you buy?
If you already own a console, buy on that. If you are choosing fresh, compare console price and check the GTA 6 price in India and editions. Pre-load timing is covered in our release time in India guide. Verdict: PS5 for the safest bet since footage comes from it; Xbox Series X is a fine equal choice.
