BioWare is closed and the next Mass Effect is cancelled, but a leaked internal trailer and a stream of developer comments have shown more of the game than anyone expected. The footage is titled Mass Effect: Universe, and developers say its core idea was a save file that works as its own branching timeline. None of this will ship, so treat it as a look at what was lost.

Quick summary

What is in the leaked Mass Effect: Universe trailer?

The roughly two-minute clip was made for internal use, reportedly for EA executives, and shows weapons, powers and alien species fans already know. Coverage describes a spy-thriller tone, the return of Liara T'Soni, a new human hero and a new Quarian companion who shows the player's N7 character a bioscanner page. A bartender in the footage is a brand-new alien race: Toutain described it on a Twitch stream as hairy and Reaper-like, possibly able to grow extra tentacles. He could not say more because some details are confidential.

How would the multiverse system have worked?

According to Polygon's report on Toutain's stream, the name came from the structure: every save file is its own universe shaped by player choices. All earlier decisions from the Mass Effect trilogy, and presumably Andromeda, stayed relevant. Each new decision could create a separate timeline, which Toutain compared to Zero Time Dilemma, so a player could even make choices that contradicted earlier ones.

The team built technology to work out which decisions connect to key plot points. Where no connection existed, the game would have to create one, so players could meet the same story with a very different experience. Players could also have shared save files if their choices opened an interesting path. Toutain said this mechanic was the main focus, with the aim of giving players "absolute autonomy".

Why was Mass Effect 5 cancelled?

EA's staff letter said a small team was in early development and the company decided not to continue, closing the studio and its Edmonton workspace. Bloomberg later reported that EA weighed Mass Effect against a new Star Wars: Battlefront game, viewing Battlefront as the less risky investment. PC Gamer notes that Battlefront 3 has not entered production and that it is unclear how far the roughly 50-person Mass Effect team had got. For the full funding and studio story, read our report on why EA shut down BioWare. Bloomberg's account rests on unnamed sources and EA has not detailed it.

Could Mass Effect come back?

Nothing is confirmed. Toutain was not optimistic, saying EA tends to shut things down and sit on its licences. An Amazon TV series based on the franchise is reported to be continuing. Composer Sam Hulick, who scored the first three games, said on X that he plans to release a re-scored version of the trailer for N7 Day (November 7), though he cautioned that timing was tight.

What does it mean for fans?

The leak confirms the project was real and ambitious, but a pre-production trailer is not a promise of final features. If you want to replay the series, the existing games remain playable; keep an eye on our deals page for discounts and on the launch calendar for upcoming RPGs.
