The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time arrives as a full remake on Switch 2 on November 5. It's the second big rebuild of the 1998 classic, after Grezzo's Ocarina of Time 3D in 2011. Here's how they compare, based on Nintendo's material and published previews.

Quick summary

How is the Switch 2 remake different from Ocarina of Time 3D?

Per Nintendo's own interview, Eiji Aonuma noted the 3DS release largely preserved the original presentation, while the new game is rebuilt fully. The 3DS version moved items to the touch screen, added gyro aiming, ran at 30 frames per second instead of the N64's 20 and added the Sheikah Stone hint videos. The remake changes how Link plays.

Does the remake have Master Quest?

Not so far. Master Quest, the harder remix with rebuilt dungeons, is in the 3DS game. Nintendo's product pages and trailers don't mention it for Switch 2, according to Vi.ki and other previews, and some writers have criticised the omission. Nintendo hasn't announced or ruled it out.

What about boss rematches and hints?

Both have them. The 3DS offers a Boss Challenge, while the remake has the Hall of Fallen Foes, where you learn about monsters and fight them again. It also swaps Sheikah Stone videos for Threads of Time. We explain both in our Hall of Fallen Foes guide.

Which version should you play?

If you want the biggest overhaul, modern controls and voiced scenes, play the Switch 2 remake. If Master Quest or a 3DS you already own matters more, the 2011 version still holds up. For a look at the remake against the N64 game, read what changed from the original, and check release time in India.

Verdict: the remake wins on presentation and control; the 3DS wins, for now, on extra content.
