Itch.io says the number of game pages created on its store each day has doubled since August 2026, from about 3,000 to over 6,000 by October 30, Polygon reported on November 1. Replies from the platform indicate AI projects make up most of the new pages.

Quick summary

What did itch.io announce?

On October 31, itch.io posted a graph on Bluesky showing page creation doubling in two months. In follow-up replies it said AI projects are the majority of new pages and that audience activity has not grown at the same pace.

Why does it matter for indie developers?

More listings with the same number of buyers means each game gets less visibility. Polygon notes itch.io is full of game jam and student projects but also home to well-known indies, so a flood of low-effort uploads makes discovery harder for everyone.

Is this only an itch.io problem?

No. Polygon says Steam is equally crowded and that some Steam Next Fest demos have been drowned out or copied by AI-made competitors. One example it cites is the team behind Drunken Goddess Reflux cancelling its demo over AI clone concerns.

What can storefronts do?

Itch.io already requires AI disclosure. Polygon argues platforms will need to monitor and restrict generative-AI content more closely, but neither itch.io nor Steam has announced new limits in the sources we checked.

What should players do?
