Xbox revenue fell 2% to $5.38 billion in Microsoft's July to September 2026 quarter, and Xbox hardware revenue dropped 14%, according to the company's fiscal 2027 Q1 results published on October 28. The decline is far smaller than last quarter's 10% drop, and Microsoft says it expects Xbox content and services to grow again in the holiday quarter with Modern Warfare 4 and GTA 6 on the way.

Quick summary

How much did Xbox earn in Microsoft's latest quarter?

For the three months ended September 30, 2026, Microsoft reported Xbox revenue of about $5.38 billion. That is the fifth quarter in a row that Xbox revenue has fallen, but the pace has slowed sharply. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma pointed out that the drop was 2% compared with 10% a quarter earlier.

The numbers also beat Microsoft's own forecast. In July the company had guided for Xbox content and services to fall by mid single digits, and the actual result was a 2% decline.

Metric (Jul to Sep 2026)ResultYear over year
Xbox revenue$5,379 million-2%
Xbox content and servicesNot given in dollars-2%
Xbox hardwareNot given in dollars-14%
Devices and Consumer segment$15.5 billion-3%
Microsoft total$92.3 billion+19%

Why did Xbox hardware revenue fall 14%?

Microsoft's filing attributes it to a lower volume of consoles sold. Sharma framed the problem as supply, writing that console sales "remain constrained by supply, with more demand than consoles available." She said Xbox is trying to get more consoles to players, including through an expanded refurbishment program. Microsoft did not release console unit numbers, so how much of the drop comes from supply and how much from weak demand cannot be confirmed from the earnings material.

Hood said hardware revenue in the current October to December quarter should decline year over year again. That lands just as the limited-edition Xbox Series X25 anniversary console, shown below, arrives in November.

What is happening with Game Pass and third-party games?

Content and services includes game sales, Game Pass and other player spending. Microsoft said the 2% fall was driven by declines in third-party content and Xbox Game Pass, while first-party content grew. Sharma said Minecraft had a record quarter and that World of Warcraft Forever, which launches on November 4, set records for its beta. Microsoft also still has not updated Game Pass subscriber numbers; the last public figure, 34 million, dates back more than two years, as The Verge notes.

Sharma also said PC platform revenue grew by double digits in the quarter.

What did Microsoft say about the holiday quarter?

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said Xbox enters the holiday season with one of its strongest first- and third-party line-ups in years. He named Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, which he said earned the best reviews for a Call of Duty game in more than a decade, and GTA 6, which he said is coming to Xbox next month. Hood said growth should be strongest in the October to December quarter, with some slowdown in Q3 and further moderation in Q4. For the Devices and Consumer segment as a whole, Microsoft guided to $15.9 billion to $16.4 billion for the quarter, according to Gaming Route's reading of the earnings call.

Are more Xbox layoffs coming?

GamesIndustry.biz reports that Xbox is continuing its restructuring after a roughly 20% workforce reduction, with further layoffs expected in November and January. That is based on reporting, not an official Microsoft announcement. Separately, Xbox staff were reportedly among up to 60,000 Microsoft employees in the US, UK, Canada and India offered a voluntary exit. Xbox's first COO, Helen Chiang, has also left the company after three months in the role.

What does this mean for gamers in India?

Nothing changes immediately for prices or availability, because Microsoft has not announced any change from these results. The takeaway is that Xbox is leaning on games, PC and cloud rather than console sales. If you want an Xbox console, Sharma's comment on supply suggests stock may stay tight, so check availability before the holiday sales.
