Meta has rolled out real-time voice conversations and an animated avatar in its Muse app. The update started on 5 November 2026 in the United States, on mobile, web and Mac. If you are in India, you cannot use it yet, because Meta has only switched it on for US users.

Quick summary

What is Muse Voice?

Muse Voice lets you talk to your Muse and hear it answer, instead of typing. Meta says replies come straight away and you can cut in at any point, like a normal conversation. It runs on two models Meta previewed at its Connect event in September: Muse Realtime Voice for speech and Muse Realtime Avatar for the animated face.

What can you do with it?

Meta pitches it for thinking out loud: brainstorming, trip planning, or rehearsing a job interview or a pitch. The more practical part is that Muse can keep working on a task in the background while you talk, so you can ask for something while cooking or walking and carry on the conversation.

How does the avatar work?

The avatar sits at the top of the chat and animates in time with Muse's speech. TechCrunch notes the default character is nicknamed Jolly and can be changed to look like a person, an animal or another character. You can hide it for voice only, keep it beside the chat or go full screen. TechCrunch also points out that Muse does not actually see you; it hears you and reacts to what you say.

How many voices are there?

Meta lists hundreds of voices and speaking styles, from a New Yorker to a pirate, and you can switch mid-conversation. Meta has not announced a separate charge for voice or avatars.

How does it compare with other AI assistants?

Voice chat is no longer unusual in AI apps. The difference Meta is leaning on is the expressive avatar and the push toward an always-available agent across phone, desktop and wearables. The AI race is moving fast this week: Google launched a longer-clip video model, covered in our Gemini Omni 1.2 Flash guide, and Anthropic opened a bank-linked assistant, covered in our Claude Personal Finance explainer.

What should you know about privacy and limits?

Muse is an adults-only product (18+). Voice chats are a new way to hand tasks to an agent that already works in the background, so check what permissions you have given the app before you start talking to it. Meta's announcement focuses on convenience and does not detail data handling for voice, so read the in-app settings for the avatar and voice options before relying on it for anything sensitive.

Also note that Meta's demo clips do not all represent the avatars available in the app, so expect the shipped experience to be simpler than the Connect previews.

Is Muse Voice available in India?

Not at launch. Every outlet we checked, including The Verge and Meta's own announcement, describes a US-only rollout, and Meta has given no date for other countries. We will update when that changes.
