Should Xbox keep putting its biggest games in Game Pass on day one? Gears of War: E-Day has turned that into the loudest argument in gaming this week. Analyst estimates say the shooter sold only a few hundred thousand copies, while roughly 1.7 million people played it through the subscription. Both numbers are unofficial, and Microsoft has not published unit sales.

Quick summary

What do the numbers actually say?

Alinea's Rhys Elliott shared early data on X shortly after launch, and IGN relayed it. The split is the striking part: Steam, where there is no Game Pass, brought in the bulk of the paid copies, while only 62,000 were sold on the Xbox side. Against that, around 722,000 subscribers bought the Premium upgrade. Elliott's own framing was that for every Xbox copy sold, nearly twelve upgrades were sold, and that he thinks the $70 premium edition is effectively dead on Xbox. He also called the game excellent, so this is a comment on the business model, not the quality.

Is E-Day a flop?

Not on quality. IGN's early campaign review gave it 9/10, and fans and critics were broadly positive. Commercially it is murkier. The revenue estimate of around $37 million sits next to a game widely discussed as costing hundreds of millions to make, and we have already looked at why that budget figure is itself disputed in our E-Day budget explainer. Journalists such as Jason Schreier have pointed out that first-party studio accounting is flexible, so a headline cost versus a headline sales number is not a clean profit and loss statement.

Why did Xbox put it in Game Pass on day one?

Because the subscription is the product. Xbox cancelled the PS5 version, kept E-Day exclusive to Xbox Series X|S and PC, and pushed it through Game Pass to keep subscribers paying. The Coalition's studio head Mike Crump has called Xbox exclusivity a natural fit for the game. For a subscription, success is measured in engagement, retention and new sign-ups, none of which show up in a copies-sold chart. The catch, as IGN notes, is that Microsoft itself acknowledged in 2023 court-related documents that Game Pass can reduce base game sales in the first year after a title is added.

How does it compare with PlayStation's launches?

Sony reported this week that Marvel's Wolverine reached 2.4 million sales in its first 50 days on PS5. Commentators were quick to set that beside E-Day. It is a rough comparison: Wolverine is a paid-only game on one platform, E-Day is a subscription title with a different revenue model and a very different install base, and the 400,000 figure is an estimate. The fair reading is that PlayStation's model rewards unit sales and Xbox's rewards subscribers, and each looks weak by the other's yardstick.

What it means for Indian players

If you only play a few big games a year, the subscription route is cheaper than buying at launch. Our guide to whether Game Pass is worth it in India breaks down every tier, and the deals page tracks free and discounted games.

What happens next?

Expect Microsoft to keep first-party games on Game Pass at launch for now, since the strategy has leadership backing, but watch for two signals: official engagement numbers in the next earnings call, and any change to the Premium early-access tier. The Coalition has also teased a 20 Years of Gears event and Season 2 for December.
