Nexus Mods, the biggest mod-sharing site in PC gaming, announced new generative AI rules on November 3, 2026. Every new upload must now declare whether AI was used, but the site says it will not introduce an outright ban. Existing mods get a grace period that ends on January 2, 2027.

Quick summary

What do mod authors have to disclose?

If you use generative AI to create, edit or process any file, asset or page documentation, Nexus says you must disclose it. The policy page defines three options:

LabelWhen to use it
AI-Generated ContentAI produced the core work, such as code, synthetic voice lines, textures, text or scripts
AI MediaAI was used only for the mod page: thumbnails, promo art, videos or descriptions
AI AssistedHuman-led mod with limited AI help, such as texture or audio upscaling or concept art

Choosing AI Assisted comes with extra homework. The mod page must list the specific AI tools or models used and exactly which AI outputs ended up in the final mod. Nexus also expects evidence of human-led work, like version-control history, and says an unsupported AI Assisted claim may be replaced by moderators with a different label.

Will Nexus Mods ban AI mods?

No. Site owner Victor "Foledinho" Folmann said Nexus is "pro-human creativity" but won't ban AI-generated mods outright, as reported by The Verge. AI-generated mods remain welcome if they meet criteria on permissions, transparency, presentation and conduct. Nexus is also making AI tags more prominent on mod pages and adding content preference controls so players who want to avoid AI content can filter it out.

What are the new permission settings?

Nexus is adding explicit permission options for AI training or tool usage, and for forks and parallel versions. They default to "Ask Me" on every hosted file, including older mods. According to the policy, "Ask Me" means nobody may use your assets for AI training, or run them through automated AI editing or generative workflows, without direct written permission. Forks of active mods need documented permission from the author, and derivative works must credit the original creators and link back. Copyleft licences such as GPL are not overridden.

What is the deadline?

The 60-day grace period runs from November 3, 2026 to January 2, 2027 and applies to the new detailed statements and permission tags. Basic AI disclosure and core site rules still apply during that time, and dismissing dashboard reminders does not exempt anyone. After the deadline, non-compliant mods go to the Trust and Safety team, authors are asked to fix them, and continued failure can lead to warnings, account restrictions or removal.

What does this mean for players?

If you download mods, you will soon see clearer AI labels and be able to filter AI content out. Nexus says it will not train AI on mods or sell or license them to anyone who does. The move mirrors the debate across PC gaming: see our look at Steam's AI disclosures and the AI slop problem on itch.io.
