Sony's July to September results are out, and the PlayStation story is a split one: fewer consoles, but a lot more profit. The Game & Network Services division earned ¥220.1 billion in operating income, up from ¥120.4 billion a year earlier, while PS5 shipments fell to 2.6 million units. Sony also gave its first official sales figure for Marvel's Wolverine.

Quick summary

How many PS5 consoles has Sony sold?

Sony reports shipments to retailers (sell-in), not sales to shoppers. The total now stands at 97.9 million, which puts the 100 million milestone within reach of the holiday quarter, when shipments usually jump. The 2.6 million shipped in Q2 is 1.0 million more than the April to June quarter but well below last year. Hardware revenue slipped only from ¥230.9 billion to ¥219.7 billion, so Sony is earning more per console shipped.

Part of the background is the memory shortage that has pushed up component costs across the industry. We covered what that means for pricing in our PS Store pricing story.

How well is Marvel's Wolverine selling?

Sony says the game, which launched on September 15, had sold 2.4 million copies by November 4, roughly 50 days in. For context, TwistedVoxel notes Ghost of Yōtei reached 3.3 million in its first 32 days, so Wolverine is a solid hit rather than a record-breaker. Earlier third-party estimates had put the launch month at around 2 million, so the official number is in line with those. Sony's count excludes add-on content.

Why did profit jump 83% if fewer consoles shipped?

Three things drove it, per the earnings coverage: more software and add-on sales, growing network services, and a favourable yen (averaging ¥159.3 per dollar versus ¥147.4). The comparison is also flattered because last year's quarter carried a ¥31.5 billion Bungie impairment and an ¥18.3 billion development cost correction that did not repeat.

What does Sony expect for the rest of the year?

Sony lifted its gaming revenue forecast from ¥4,540 billion to ¥4,830 billion and operating income from ¥660 billion to ¥700 billion, citing third-party software, cost cuts and network services. It cautioned that a first-party release date change would take some of that back. That lines up with the delay of God of War Laufey to May 20, 2027, though Sony's summary did not name the game in the coverage we read, so treat the link as our inference.

What does it mean for you?

For buyers, the key point is that the PS5 is ageing and shipping fewer units, but the platform is healthy: 127 million monthly users and 78% digital sales. Expect holiday deals rather than price cuts on hardware; check our deals page for current offers, and the launch calendar for what lands next.
