Intel Z990 Motherboards: Nova Lake LGA1954 and Z890 Support

Intel's next desktop platform is taking shape on the motherboard side, even though Intel itself has said very little. Board makers ASRock and Gigabyte have both leaked Z990 model names, and the practical takeaway for builders is already clear: Nova Lake needs a new LGA1954 socket, so your Z890 board will not carry over. Everything below is labelled by how solid it is.
Quick summary
- Nova Lake-S desktop CPUs are reported to use the new LGA1954 socket, which Intel's own design-tools store names (confirmed).
- Z890 and B860 boards (LGA1851) will not take Nova Lake CPUs.
- ASRock Z990 boards appeared in shipping records in September; Gigabyte registered dozens of Z990 names in October (leaks).
- Chipset details such as PCIe lanes come from one leaker, Jaykihn, and are unconfirmed.
- Intel has not announced a launch date, price or chipset names.
Will my Z890 motherboard work with Nova Lake?
No. A motherboard-maker listing on Intel's Design-In Tools store describes an ILM kit for the "LGA1954 NVL-S" interposer, and NVL-S is Nova Lake-S, the desktop part. That ties the new socket to Nova Lake. Arrow Lake boards use LGA1851, so a different socket means a different board. Earlier reports suggest the physical CPU size stays at 45 x 37.5 mm, so some existing coolers may fit, but that is unconfirmed.
Intel did say its recent Core Ultra 200S Plus chips stay compatible with 800-series boards, so buying a Z890 today still makes sense for current CPUs. It just is not a stepping stone to Nova Lake.
What do the Z990 board leaks show?
In September, Club386 and ComputerBase spotted five ASRock Z990 boards in shipping records, including the Z990 Taichi Creator, Taichi White, Steel Legend WiFi, Pro RS and Challenger WiFi White. Shipping dates pointed to July. In October, VideoCardz reported that Gigabyte had registered 40 Z990 model names in the Eurasian Economic Union database, covering AORUS XTREME, MASTER, PRO, ELITE and STEALTH tiers plus cheaper EAGLE and DS3H lines. Gigabyte also showed an AORUS Z990 PRO with a covered socket at Computex 2026.
Registrations and shipping records show that partners are preparing products. They do not give a launch date or price.
What chipsets are leaked for Nova Lake?
Leaker Jaykihn posted an Intel 900-series table in February, naming Z990, Z970, W980, Q970 and B960. Outlets including HWCooling, TechPowerUp and Wccftech repeated it, so treat it as one source, not many. Intel has confirmed none of it.
| Chipset | Reported role | Reported highlights (unconfirmed) |
|---|---|---|
| Z990 | Flagship | Up to 12 PCIe 5.0 and 12 PCIe 4.0 lanes, CPU and BCLK overclocking, lane bifurcation, NVMe RAID, Thunderbolt 5 |
| Z970 | Cheaper enthusiast | Multiplier overclocking only, B960-class I/O, no bifurcation |
| B960 | Mainstream / entry | 14 PCIe 4.0 lanes, no CPU overclocking |
| Q970 / W980 | Business / workstation | vPro; W980 alone supports ECC |
HWCooling also relays that no entry-level H-series chipset is expected, which would make B960 the cheapest tier. Another leak, covered by TechSpot in June, says the Z990 chip is smaller but draws more power, about 14 W peak against Z890's lower figure. All unconfirmed.

When will Nova Lake motherboards launch?
Nobody outside Intel can say. Reports disagree: some earlier coverage said late 2026, while ComputerBase writes that the market launch is expected in early 2027. Intel has not committed to a date in any document we could find. Keep an eye on our launch calendar for confirmed dates.
Should you wait or buy now?
If you need a PC now, buy for today's CPUs, since Z890 is fully supported. If you want Intel's next gaming chip, which reports say aims for a big gaming jump, waiting is the only way, and expect a pricey first wave of Z990 boards with DDR5 only. Frequently asked questions
Is Z890 compatible with Nova Lake?
No. Nova Lake-S is tied to the new LGA1954 socket by Intel's own design-tools listing, while Z890 uses LGA1851.
What is Z990?
Z990 is the reported flagship chipset for Nova Lake boards. Intel has not announced it; names come from leaks and board-maker records.
When do Z990 boards launch?
No date is confirmed. Reports range from late 2026 to early 2027.
Will Nova Lake use DDR4?
Reports say DDR5 only, but Intel has not confirmed memory support.
