Sony's Santa Monica Studio has delayed God of War Laufey by three months. The PS5 game was due on February 16, 2027 and now launches on May 20, 2027, the studio said on November 4. Its statement says the extra time goes on "the finishing touches" and pushing the game "to its fullest potential", and it names no specific problem.

Quick summary

Old date: February 16, 2027. New date: May 20, 2027, a delay of 93 days.
Platform: PS5 only so far.
Reason given: finishing touches. No bug, scope or technical issue is named.
Pre-orders opened on September 29 and were still live after the announcement, according to Final Weapon.
Standard edition pre-order price in the US: $69.99; the Collector Box is $149.99 and does not include the game.

What did Santa Monica Studio say about the God of War Laufey delay?

The studio thanked fans for the response to the June reveal, said it does not take the trust placed in the team for granted, and then moved the date. It ended with a promise to "be back to share more updates soon", without saying when. VGC, Engadget and Gaming.net all carry the same statement, and none of them reports a stated reason beyond polish.

What happens to your God of War Laufey pre-order?

The statement does not mention pre-orders, bonus items or the Collector Box. Pixel Herald checked Sony's store pages on the morning of the announcement and found they still listed February 16, so those pages may simply not have updated yet. Final Weapon reports pre-orders are still live on the PlayStation Store and at retailers.

The announced pre-order bonuses were the Last Wish Armor Set, a cosmetic Phranque Golden Leaves appearance and an in-game resource pack, per Gaming.net. Sony has not said whether those change. If you are in India, check the price and edition on your regional PlayStation Store before paying, because we have not seen a confirmed rupee price in the coverage we read.

Why does the February to May move matter for PS5 owners?

Engadget points out that the move takes Laufey out of a crowded start to 2027 and away from Sony's own Until Dawn 2, which is out on January 28. MLB The Show usually lands in March, so the new date also means Sony has a big first-party game in the spring quarter. Pixel Herald's release calendar check found Laufey is currently the only game on its list with a May date.

What is God of War Laufey about?

Laufey is the first mainline God of War game that does not star Kratos. You play as Faye, Kratos's wife and Atreus's mother, who wakes in the Everywhen, an afterlife of the gods where deities and creatures from different mythologies collide. Deborah Ann Woll returns as Faye, Jack Quaid plays a living cosmic cube called Phranque, and Perlina Lau plays Rue, an enchanted ribbon guardian. Sony revealed the game at its June 2026 State of Play, and the February date was set a few months after that, so it held for a little over three months.

Should you still pre-order God of War Laufey?

There is no rush. A longer wait usually means a more finished game, but a delay announced after pre-orders opened is also a reason to wait for reviews. If you do want the pre-order bonuses, the safest move is to keep your order and watch Sony's store page for an updated date and bonus terms. Our launch calendar now shows the new date.

The delay lands in a busy year for PlayStation news. We have also covered why Sony has not decided on a PS6 date, and how GTA 6 pre-loading works on PS5, which is the other big PlayStation story of the month.
