Intel's Nova Lake and AMD's Zen 6 are both expected in 2027, and both are aiming at the same crown: the best gaming CPU. Nothing below is official. Everything about Nova Lake's "BFC" big-cache chips and AMD's next Ryzen chips comes from leaks, database entries and tipsters, so treat every number as unconfirmed.

Quick summary

What do we know about Intel Nova Lake-S?

TechSpot reported on October 14 that a leaked table from LC Tech Leaks lists seven desktop chips on the new 900-series platform. The tipster Jaykihn says the standard chips also carry the four low-power E-cores and vPro support, which the table simply omits. Intel has said Nova Lake will launch by the end of 2026, and TechSpot says most signs point to a CES 2027 unveiling, with the biggest dual-tile 52-core models arriving later.

What is Intel's bLLC and how does it compare with X3D?

AMD's X3D chips stack extra L3 cache on the compute die. Intel's internal documents call its version bLLC, and how it is attached is still unknown. TechSpot notes Intel's Clearwater Forest server chips place cache in the base tile, while some observers expect a separate cache tile on the ring bus. Earlier reports put cache at up to 144MB per compute tile, so up to 288MB on dual-tile chips, which would beat the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2's 208MB total cache on paper. That is a cache total, not a performance result.

It also matters that extra cache helped Intel little in TechSpot's 2024 test of Raptor Lake, because those chips were limited by clock speed. The hope is that Nova Lake's new P-core design can use it.

What do the early benchmark leaks say?

Per GameGPU's write-up of the Broken Silicon podcast, a 28-core Nova Lake engineering sample scored 5210 in PassMark single-thread, roughly 3% above the Core Ultra 9 285K and 8.4% above the Ryzen 9 9950X3D. Its multi-thread score was 61,509, below both. The hosts stressed it is pre-production silicon with raw firmware and unknown power limits.

What do we know about AMD Zen 6?

Wccftech's October 20 report says the Hydra tool creator 1usmus believes a single 12-core Zen 6 chiplet could get close to the 16-core Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 in multi-thread work. The flagship Olympic Ridge chips are rumoured to reach 24 cores on two chiplets and use TSMC N2P. Separately, a Zen 6c EPYC server chip showed about a 24% IPC gain over a Ryzen 7 9700X at 4.1GHz. GameGPU's source cautions that Zen 5's claimed 16% IPC gain sometimes became only 2% in games.

Should you buy now or wait?

Verdict: if you need a gaming PC today, a current Ryzen X3D chip is a safe pick, and waiting means 2027 with no confirmed prices. AM5 owners have the easier path, since Zen 6 reportedly drops into existing boards. Intel buyers face a new socket plus pricey DDR5. With RAM costs rising (see our budget gaming PC build guide), upgrade timing matters. Frequently asked questions

Is Nova Lake faster than Ryzen X3D?

Unknown. Only an early 28-core engineering sample has leaked, showing about 3% higher PassMark single-thread than the Core Ultra 9 285K. No gaming results exist yet.

Does Nova Lake need a new motherboard?

Yes, leaks say it uses the new LGA 1954 socket with 900-series chipsets, while Zen 6 is expected to stay on AM5.

What does BFC mean on Intel chips?

Unconfirmed. Intel's documents call the tech bLLC (big last-level cache); BFC appears to be the leaked retail branding for those models.

When will Nova Lake and Zen 6 launch?

Neither has an official date. Intel says Nova Lake arrives by end of 2026, with a CES 2027 unveil widely expected; Zen 6 desktop is rumoured for 2027.
