Intel has publicly admitted it had a hole in its high-end desktop lineup, and it says Nova Lake is the fix. On the October 29 earnings call, CEO Lip-Bu Tan said Nova Lake, Intel's first 18A-P client product, is running ahead of schedule, and CFO David Zinsner conceded the gap. A fresh leak now claims roughly 20% better gaming performance. Here is what is confirmed, what is rumour, and what it means if you are planning a gaming PC.

Quick summary

What did Intel actually confirm about Nova Lake?

From the Q3 2026 earnings call, as reported by ThePCEnthusiast and Wccftech: Tan said Nova Lake is tracking ahead of schedule and that Intel expects about twice as many design wins at launch as Panther Lake. Design wins mean makers have picked the chip for products, not that units have sold. Zinsner admitted Intel's high-end desktop portfolio had a hole and said Nova Lake closes it. Intel will share more at CES 2027, but it has not announced an exact release date.

What is 18A-P and why does it matter?

18A-P is the enhanced version of the 18A node used for Panther Lake. Intel Foundry's published figures, quoted by ThePCEnthusiast, claim over 9% higher performance at the same power, more than 18% lower power at the same performance, 20 to 40% lower thermal resistance and 10 to 30% lower via resistance versus 18A. Those are manufacturing gains, not CPU benchmarks, so do not read them as "9% faster games". Intel also has not said which Nova Lake tiles will be built on 18A-P.

What does the 20% gaming leak say (unconfirmed)?

Leaker Haze2K1 (@Haze2K1) posted figures he says come from Intel presentation slides:

ClaimReported upliftStatus
Single-thread, without bLLCAbout +8%Unconfirmed leak
Single-thread, with bLLCAbout +17%Unconfirmed leak
Overall gamingAbout +20%Unconfirmed leak
APX-relatedAbout +15%Unconfirmed; needs software support

ThePCEnthusiast points out the post gives no games list, reference chip, memory setup or power limits, so the 20% is a target, not a result. The 15% APX figure should not be stacked on top of it either: APX adds registers and instructions that software and compilers must adopt, so it will not speed up existing games automatically.

What is bLLC and can it beat AMD's X3D chips?

bLLC stands for big last-level cache, Intel's rumoured answer to AMD's 3D V-Cache. Earlier leaks, summarised by ThePCEnthusiast, mention up to 144MB of extra cache per compute tile and larger-cache models named Core Ultra 9 4970K BFC and Core Ultra 7 4870K BFC, sitting above the 28-core Core Ultra 9 4950K. None of that is confirmed, and Intel appears to be planning separate cache and non-cache variants rather than putting bLLC on everything.

The bar is real. In ThePCEnthusiast's own 13-game test at 1080p, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D averaged 197 FPS against 188 FPS for the Core Ultra 7 270K Plus, about 5% ahead with better 1% lows. At 1440p the gap narrowed and at 4K it was practically identical. Nova Lake will also face whatever X3D chips AMD sells by the time it ships.

When is the Nova Lake release date, and does it need a new motherboard?

Intel's only confirmed date is the CES 2027 reveal in January. Per Wccftech's reading of the call, single compute-tile models, topping out at 28 cores, arrive first, and dual-tile models with up to 52 cores follow in the second half of 2027. Desktop Nova Lake-S is tied to the LGA1954 socket, so Z890 and other LGA1851 boards are out. Noctua has said its existing LGA1700 and LGA1851 coolers will fit LGA1954 without extra mounting hardware. Leaker Jaykihn has pointed to new 900-series chipsets named Z990, Z970 and B960, but Intel has not confirmed them.

Should Indian gamers wait for Nova Lake?

There is no India price, and a new socket nearly always means a new board plus likely faster DDR5, at a time when memory is costly. Wccftech-sourced coverage by Shattered cites a 32GB DDR5-6000 kit at about $429 to $450 in the US, citing TrendForce forecasts of further DRAM increases. Our budget gaming PC guide for India shows what parts cost right now, and the PCB shortage report explains why prices are under pressure. Our practical take: if your current CPU still performs, wait for CES 2027 reviews; if you are building today, buy on current benchmarks. Track dates on the launch calendar.

Frequently asked questions

When will Intel Nova Lake launch?

Intel will share details at CES in January 2027 but has not given a retail date. Reports say single-tile chips come first and 52-core dual-tile parts follow in the second half of 2027.

Is the 20% Nova Lake gaming boost confirmed?

No. It comes from leaker Haze2K1, who says it is based on Intel slides. Intel has published no Nova Lake gaming benchmarks.

What socket does Nova Lake use?

Desktop Nova Lake-S is associated with LGA1954. Current LGA1851 motherboards, including Z890, will not be compatible.

Will my cooler fit Nova Lake?

Noctua says its existing LGA1700 and LGA1851 coolers will work with LGA1954 without extra mounting hardware. Check your own cooler maker.

What is bLLC on Nova Lake?

Big last-level cache, a rumoured large cache Intel may offer on select models to compete with AMD's X3D chips. Capacity and pricing are not confirmed.
