NetEase has locked in a launch window for Ananta, the open-world urban RPG that players keep calling "anime GTA". The game arrives on January 15, 2027 on PlayStation 5 and Windows PC, with Android and iOS versions also planned. It is free to play. Polygon reported the date on November 6 after a new release-date trailer, and the Steam page already lists the same day.

What is Ananta?

Ananta is described on its Steam page as an urban open-world RPG. You play a supernatural investigator who fights evil forces across two large cities, switching between a cast of characters and building your own team. The setting mixes busy business districts with quiet tea towns and old streets.

The release-date trailer opened with a short story setup, then showed a hero hanging off the side of a plane mid-flight. After that came more open-world footage: scooters, cars and futuristic vehicles, flying sections, and plenty of mini-games and side activities beyond the main story.

Why is it called anime GTA?

Earlier trailers leaned on the comparison. Polygon says the game borrows from Grand Theft Auto, Marvel's Spider-Man and Genshin Impact, which explains the city driving, the building-to-building swinging and the anime art style. Polygon also points out that Ananta's design looks closer to a social RPG that competes with GTA Online than to a story-first single-player game.

Is Ananta really free, and is it gacha?

Ananta is free to play. Many fans worry that means a Genshin-style gacha, where you pay for random character pulls. Polygon's read of the trailer and announcement is that it does not appear to be a gacha game. Purchases are described as cosmetics, vehicles and other decorations instead of character unlocks.
