World of Warcraft: Forever goes live worldwide on November 4 at 3:00 pm PST, and before you see Azeroth you will make two choices that Blizzard says matter: an Experience Preset (Classic or Enhanced) and a Ruleset (Normal, PvP, Roleplay or Roleplay PvP). Here is what each one does, based on Blizzard's launch post.

Quick summary

What is the Experience Preset in WoW: Forever?

The first time you log in you see a "Choose Your Experience Preset" screen, and you only see it once. It bundles a set of defaults rather than locking you in.

Blizzard describes Classic as a cleaner, original-style experience with less automatic guidance, and Enhanced as higher visual fidelity with more interface features switched on.

Classic or Enhanced: which one should you choose?

Pick Classic if you want the 2004 feel and are happy to find quests the old way, without map markers. Pick Enhanced if you are new, returning after years, or just want one bag, transmog and clearer quest hints. Since you can flip any single option afterwards, many players will likely start Enhanced and turn off what they dislike. That is our reading of Blizzard's guidance, not an official rule.

Can you change character models later?

Yes. Each new character can use High Definition or Standard Definition models and animations. Blizzard says this choice is cosmetic only, with no effect on abilities or progression, and can be changed in the Options menu or at a Barbershop.

What are the Rulesets in WoW: Forever?

Instead of choosing a realm, you choose the kind of world you want. Each ruleset works as a broad player ecosystem.

How do character names work?

Each character gets a two-part name, and the full name is unique within a region. Blizzard also ran early name reservation for pack owners from October 27 to November 3.

What do you need to play?

Access needs an active World of Warcraft subscription or game time, per DLCompare's summary of Blizzard's announcement. Optional upgrade packs start at $30 with the Skyborne Heroic Pack. Check the Battle.net shop for current editions.

Verdict

Enhanced is the safe default, Classic is for purists, and neither is permanent. For rulesets, Normal suits most people; choose PvP or Roleplay only if you want that lifestyle from day one.
