Star Wars Battlefront 3: Everything We Know So Far

Star Wars: Battlefront 3 has not been announced, and by Bloomberg's account it has not even started development. What exists is an EA memo saying Respawn and DICE will collaborate on a future project, reports that it is a Star Wars game for Lucasfilm, and a Bloomberg story saying EA closed BioWare partly to fund it. This guide sorts what is confirmed from what is reported.

Quick summary

• Confirmed by EA: Respawn and DICE will "collaborate on a future project" (October 21 memo). Star Wars is not named.
• Reported: Variety's sources say the project is Star Wars: Battlefront 3 for Lucasfilm.
• Reported (Bloomberg): EA picked it over the next Mass Effect, and it "has not even begun development yet".
• Not known: release date, platforms, era, gameplay, reveal date.

Is Star Wars Battlefront 3 officially announced?

No. EA's internal memo from Cam Weber and David Tinson said that in addition to future Battlefield titles, Respawn and DICE would be brought together on a future project. The memo did not say Star Wars. Variety then reported, citing multiple sources, that the project is the next Battlefront. EA has not confirmed that, and no footage, platforms or window exist.

Who is making Battlefront 3?

Per Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, replying on Bluesky as relayed by Output Lag, "DICE and Respawn will make Battlefront III." That answers an earlier rumor, relayed by TechPowerUp, that Lucasfilm was weighing Bungie or DICE. DICE made the last two Battlefront games, and Respawn makes Apex Legends and the Star Wars Jedi series.

Why did EA pick Battlefront 3 over Mass Effect?

Schreier reports that EA had two sci-fi action games each projected to cost hundreds of millions of dollars, and executives judged Star Wars the "less risky, more predictable" bet. The publisher also carries heavy debt after its buyout. We broke the money side down in our BioWare closure report, and the cancelled game is covered in the Mass Effect Universe leak explainer. All of it rests on anonymous sources.

When will Battlefront 3 release?

Not any time soon. ComicBook.com's read of the reports is that the game is very far away, and a game that has not begun development rules out a near-term launch. Schreier also said the third Star Wars Jedi game is "far in development" and "should be officially announced soon", so Jedi 3 looks likely to show first. Neither EA nor Respawn has commented on its timing.

What happened to the earlier Battlefront games?

Battlefront 2 launched in 2017 and became the centre of the loot-box fight that pushed EA to strip paid progression out of it, per Output Lag. A third game has been requested by fans ever since, which is why every hint from EA gets so much attention. A reported scale of hundreds of millions in cost also means EA will want a broad audience, not a niche one.

What do fans want from Battlefront 3?

Polygon's opinion piece argues the High Republic era would suit it. That is commentary, not a leak, and nothing about the era, modes or monetization has been reported. The 2017 game became the centre of a loot-box backlash, so how EA handles progression will matter. Track new reveals on our upcoming games calendar.
